Up & Coming Artist: Slow-P

MEET SLOW-P
A man with a dream and the passion and talent to go get it. Without a shadow of a doubt, this Dallas native will put his stamp on the hip-hop game before it's all said and done. Mark my words. His art has a style to it that is unmatched. It's definitely hip-hop. It's definitely southern. But, he is definitely not a typical southern, hip-hop artist. If I tried to define his music, I would say it's Diverse, Deep and Dope! The triple D. How suiting? In all seriousness, this man has talent. I'm a fan. I have the privilege of knowing him on a personal level, and I can vouch along with anyone else who knows him that he is a stand up man who speaks the raw truth. They don't make too many like Slow-P. So, prepare your hearts to love him and prepare your ears to hear about him. He's on the rise.

First off, what inspires you to be an artist? What drives you?
My love for words and how they make me feel. I’m very passionate. I’m inspired by emotions, struggle, beauty and reality. My family drives me. Wanting to see them doing well drives me. My future children drives me. My future wife drives me. God drives me. I don’t wanna waste his talent and I want him to be glorified through my success. Cuz, I’m a product of God's work.

What are some projects you've done in the past?
I’ve done some mixtapes but the biggest thing I’ve done is the project with my brother PJ aka J Tru called “Slow P & P Funk Jr. Respect my Mind.”

As a young man growing up in Dallas, who you are some artist that you've been influenced by?
Growing up I was influenced by UGK, Master P, Pac, Bone Thugs and Harmony and believe it or not… Rakim & Jimi Hendrix.

To me, your music is in a different bracket than most Texas rappers. How would you describe your style of music?
I think my style is kinda throw back. My fondest memories are from my childhood. I’m kinda stuck in the 90’s-the golden era- that's when I discovered rap. So, I think me being raised by old folks (my daddy is 77years old) and always being 'round my older bro’s jammin what they jam makes my style “a lil throwback” but right on time.

What reactions or impressions do you hope to recieve from listeners?
"I hope they feel the way I felt about Pac, Pimp C, Bun B, Rakim and all the other influences I named earlier. I hope they feel like I care about them, like I’m giving them my all and putting my best foot forward. I hope they feel like I’m just like them, like I feel their pain and they feel mine. I hope they think I’m real and something special-that’s what I’m goin for…cuz that’s what it is!"

How do you feel about the stance of hip hop today?
I think hip hop is getting more lyrical. Lyrics kinda fell off for a while as far as being important to the new artists and fans but I think folkz are starting come wit it and fans are appreciating it

How do you plan on making your footprint in the hip hop game?
My plan is to be creative in as many areas of my career as possible. I think the best thing I can do is to keep growing as a person and as an artist. My subject matter will be my footprints in the game. To speak on something in a way that its never been said before or even to touch on a subject that has never been spoken on…that’s difficult with so much already having been said. I probably shouldn’t give my secrets away tho. lol.

Tell us something about you that we wouldn't expect?
I’ll give u two things…I used to go months without speaking to my family as a youngsta and I love disney movies to this day, lol..They helped me escape when I was little and they still do from time to time.

A lot of your music is geared toward women, what do you look for in a woman?
She gotta actively love the Lord. Like, be making moves towards trying to live for him and abiding by his commandments. I love that in a woman. I find that women that know the Word are so wise and phenomonal. But first things first, to be super real, looks come first cuz that’s what attract me to a woman to even find out if she loves the Lord. So she’s gotta have a pretty face and I like my women thick. I like all shapes and sizes but I like my southern bell to be thick with natural hair and a pretty smile. Not loud but not quiet. And strong enough to try to put me in my place when she thinks I’m out of line…that way I can respect her properly.

Your going to school full-time and you do your music full-time, how to balance the two?
I just do it and don’t think about it….just do it and get it in I guess.

What's your major? Why?
Sociology.  I have a love for people. I wanna see folks grow and do better. Sociology will allow me to do so. I’d be a counselor if rap don’t work. lol!

What are some upcoming projects that we can be expecting from you?.....
“Waiting On Destiny” is my latest project. It’s a solo project and it’ll be out any minute now so look out for it. I’m already working on the next project, I think imma call it “Trust and Believe.”

Where can we find your music?
When “Waiting On Destiny” is released it’ll be on itunes and in stores. Right now, they can check out some stuff on youtube and buy me and my brothers “Respect My Mind” project on itunes.
