looking past our past...

Yesterday is history,
tomorrow is a mystery,
 today is a gift...
that's why they call it the present.

We have all had our less than proud moments. Those times in life we wish we can un-live. Those memories we have to fluff with sayings like “that was a lesson learned, not a regret,” or “everything happens for a reason.” These sayings do serve some truth, but there no instant cure. They make me feel better, but the back my mind reminds me that I should have known better. I guess it’s all a part of life.

I’m learning that it’s so, SO important to get past your past. Yesterday is only a memory, it no longer exist. Although your past led you to your current position, it does not have to dictate where your future will lead you. Whenever we become a prisoner of our past, we become manipulated by our memories. We must know that we are mistake-prone individuals and the “mistakes we’ve made” are just that, the “mistakes we’ve made.” They do not define us. We will never stop making mistakes, we will never always make the right decision, and we will disappoint ourselves time and time again. There is no such thing as a perfectionist, so there is no need to drive ourselves insane trying to become one.

One of my favorite songs describes mistakes as chances taken. We have to take chances to learn from them, grow from them, and go from them.

We cannot move forward if we are constantly looking back. Yes, it’s important to know where you have come from, but it’s also important to figure out where you’re going.

Where you are is where you deserve to be. Whether we got to this place by good decisions or bad decisions is not a question, just be grateful that we are still here and everyday allows us a chance at a new beginning. We can only make today and tomorrow better and strive to create better memories of the past.

When you are mindful of the person you are, or at least the person you have hopes of becoming, it makes it easier to not get caught up in the past.

Past experiences bring wisdom. They make you stronger. They make you better.

Past experiences are teachers, so learn.

****This is far more easier said than done. It’s a concept that I can only hope to master. Learning.

Have a beautiful day!
